M*A*S*H*

It all started with a book written by Dr. Richard Hornberger as he sat waiting for patients at his offices in Bremen, Maine. Using the alias Richard Hooker, it was a fictional account of his years at the 8055 Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Korea. Hornberger based Hawkeye on himself and wrote a number of novels featuring the same characters but none were as successful as the first.

Ostensibly set during the Korean War (1950-1953), "M*A*S*H" is a black comedy about life in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit located only three miles from the front lines. The primary mission of the MASH unit is to provide immediate medical treatment to Americans wounded in combat, and the young surgeons are often up to their elbows in blood and guts for long periods of time. But when they're off duty, the MASH unit personnel keep their sanity by pursuing a wacky, irreverent lifestyle that leads to some hilarious adventures.
