A Rogers and Hammerstein musical based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Tales of the South Pacific" by James Michener. It takes place on an island paradise during World War II and focuses on two parallel love stories that are threatened by prejudice and war. A nurse falls in love with a French planter but refuses his proposal of marriage when she discovers that the mother of his children was an island native. At the same time a lieutenant refuses to be with a native girl whom he falls in love with for the same reasons. When the two men are recruited for a dangerous mission, the nurse realizes that life is too short to deny her own happiness and decides to confront and conquer her prejudices.
